Synopsis
The Family Fang (2016) — stream online on iFILM — is a darkly comic drama directed by and starring Jason Bateman, opposite Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken. Calder and Annie Fang grew up as unwilling props in their parents' provocative public art pieces. Now adults, they have managed to put distance between themselves and that childhood. Then Haywood and Camille Fang vanish.
The police say it looks like foul play. The Fang children are not so sure — their parents spent decades staging disappearances, confrontations and scenes designed to shock strangers. Is this grief or another performance? Bateman lets that question breathe for the full 106 minutes without rushing to an answer.
Walken and Kidman make the parents feel genuinely strange rather than cartoonishly eccentric, and that restraint is what lifts the film above its quirky-family premise. It is really about what it costs children to be someone's art project — and how you make peace with that as an adult. Stream The Family Fang (2016) online on iFILM.
