Underground: The Julian Assange Story (2012) — watch online on iFILM. Australian director Robert Connolly goes back to 1989, before the leaks and the extradition hearings, when Assange was a teenager in Melbourne suburbs logging on under the alias Mendax. Callan McAuliffe plays him.
Assange and two friends formed a loose group they called the International Subversives, breaching systems at NASA, the Pentagon, and US defense networks using early home computers. Their rule: look but don't take. Detective Ken Roberts (Anthony LaPaglia) didn't buy the distinction. Assange's mother Christine (Rachel Griffiths) fought through every legal stage with a stubbornness that matched her son's.
The film ends before WikiLeaks begins — it's an origin story, a portrait of a young man who found he could walk through walls and kept walking. Stream Underground: The Julian Assange Story (2012) online on iFILM.
