The missing fifth is Alice Russell — the whistle-blower Falk and Cooper have been running as a key informant. Each survivor gives a different account. None of them adds up. As the investigation pushes deeper into the bush, it becomes clear the wilderness itself is working against anyone trying to find the truth.
Connolly treats the rugged Victorian highland landscape as more than backdrop — the terrain shapes how characters move, what they hide, and what closes in on them.
