Synopsis
A Sunday in the Country (Un dimanche à la campagne, 1984) is Bertrand Tavernier's quiet French drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. One ordinary Sunday in 1912, an old painter waits for his family at his country house just outside Paris.
Monsieur Ladmiral has spent his life in comfortable, unremarkable art, and he knows it. Every week his son Gonzague arrives with a wife and three children, and the day unfolds in its usual rhythm: lunch, a walk through the garden, small talk that circles around nothing. Then his daughter Irène turns up — restless, single, rarely here, and instantly the centre of everything. Tavernier builds the film out of glances and silences rather than plot, letting unspoken regrets and a fading pre-war world do the talking. Louis Ducreux and Sabine Azéma play it with feather-light precision. The film won Tavernier the directing prize at Cannes. A gentle, unhurried watch for lovers of impressionist mood over story.
