Synopsis
Let Joy Reign Supreme (1975) — watch online on iFILM, a French historical drama directed by Bertrand Tavernier. Philippe Noiret heads the cast alongside Jean Rochefort and Jean-Pierre Marielle.
France, 1719: four years since Louis XIV's death, a teenager sits on the throne, and Regent Philippe d'Orléans is the man actually running the country. He wants to head off peasant uprisings before they turn into something worse, but he holds authority without legitimacy. The clergy pursues its own interests. The nobility schemes around him. Ordering a group of rebels executed falls to Philippe as a duty he cannot refuse, and he finds no comfort in it. His one unclouded pleasure is women — and even that is not enough.
Tavernier uses the period setting to ask questions that are not really about the eighteenth century: what does it cost to govern humanely when the system you govern through is rotten? Stream Let Joy Reign Supreme (1975) online on iFILM.
