Synopsis
Tales from the Golden Age (Amintiri din epoca de aur, 2009) is a Romanian anthology comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Six urban legends from the final years of Ceaușescu's rule, made by a collective of directors that includes Cristian Mungiu — whose 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days took the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2007.
The "Golden Age" was the official label for the last fifteen years of communist Romania. Each short drops ordinary people into the machine: a party directive that has to be carried out at any cost, a village tasked with giving an official portrait the reception it deserves, a pig that shouldn't be in a city apartment. The tone moves between deadpan farce and something colder without announcement — which is roughly how that era operated.
French-Romanian co-production, 155 minutes. Mungiu applies the same dry, unadorned eye he uses in his solo work, but here the claustrophobia lifts just enough to let the black humor through. Anthologies rarely hold this kind of consistency across every segment. Stream Tales from the Golden Age online on iFILM.
