Synopsis
L'immensità (2022) is an Italian-French drama directed by Emanuele Crialese — watch it online on iFILM. Penélope Cruz plays Clara, a woman trapped in a suffocating marriage in 1970s Rome, who finds her only real ally inside her own home: her eldest child.
That child, twelve-year-old Adriana, refuses the name and insists on being called Andrea — a boy living in a family that has no language for what he is. The father dismisses it, the neighbours stare, and the world outside has no frame for it either. Clara doesn't fully understand, but she protects instinctively. Crialese films their bond through music, imagination and bursts of shared escape — sequences where the two of them simply dance or drift into a world they build together, far from the apartment's grinding tension.
Crialese, who is himself transgender, has described the film as autobiographical. It competed for the Golden Lion at Venice 2022, and Cruz gives one of her most inward performances: less about dramatic outbursts, more about the small gestures of a mother holding a fragile peace together.
