Synopsis
Lancelot of the Lake (Lancelot du Lac, 1974) is Robert Bresson's stark medieval drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The knights of the Round Table ride back to Camelot empty-handed — the search for the Holy Grail has failed, and only a handful of them are left.
Lancelot (Luc Simon) is bound to King Arthur by oath and to Queen Guinevere by a love he can't give up. The two loyalties pull him apart. Mordred senses the crack and means to widen it into open war. Bresson strips the chivalry of all romance: clanking armor, blood on grass, horses, hands and faces in close-up, almost no score. He films the tournament through hooves and banners rather than the riders' faces.
This is late Bresson at his purest — non-professional actors, minimal gestures, flat voices in place of passion. The French director treats the Camelot myth like a machine grinding toward its own collapse. It won't suit everyone: viewers after Hollywood battle spectacle will find it dry, while lovers of rigorous art cinema get a feast. Stream Lancelot of the Lake (1974) online on iFILM.
