Synopsis
The Wild Goose Lake (南方车站的聚会, 2019) is a Chinese crime thriller directed by Diao Yinan — watch it online on iFILM. Hu Ge plays Zhou Zenong, a low-level motorcycle-theft boss whose life unravels the moment he accidentally shoots a cop during a turf dispute and becomes the most wanted man in both the criminal underworld and the police force.
On the run through the rain-soaked backstreets of Wuhan, Zhou crosses paths with Liu Aiai, a woman who steers clients toward sex workers and has her own reasons to help him disappear. Diao Yinan structures the story through multiple witnesses talking to each other, folding past into present so that every new scene reshuffles what you thought you knew. The line between victim and predator keeps moving.
Shot by cinematographer Dong Jingsong almost entirely in darkness, with neon reflections and shallow water doing the work of conventional lighting, the film competed in the Main Competition at Cannes 2019. It is a Chinese-French co-production that plays like classic noir updated for a surveillance-state world — tense, visually precise, and genuinely bleak.
