Synopsis
Goin' South (1978) is a western with a comic, romantic streak that you can watch online on iFILM. Jack Nicholson both directed it and stars as Henry Moon, a small-time horse thief caught just short of the Mexican border with a noose waiting for him.
What saves Moon is an odd post-Civil War law in a Texas town: a condemned man walks free if a single or widowed woman agrees to marry him. The hand that reaches out belongs to prim, tight-lipped Julia Tate, who has a gold claim of her own to protect. The marriage of convenience turns into a running brawl between two stubborn people. This was Mary Steenburgen's screen debut, and the bit parts are stacked with soon-to-be stars: Christopher Lloyd, John Belushi and a very young Danny DeVito.
Nicholson plays the grinning rascal at full tilt, and the picture lives on the chemistry of its mismatched pair. It's light, dusty and charmingly unserious — a western for people who like the genre without the solemnity. Stream Goin' South (1978) online on iFILM.
