Synopsis
Isabelle Huppert investigates corruption — and then starts embodying it — in Comedy of Power (L'Ivresse du pouvoir, 2006), a French-German drama directed by Claude Chabrol that you can watch online on iFILM.
Magistrate Jeanne Charmant-Killman opens a fraud case against a powerful CEO suspected of systematic corporate theft. The investigation climbs fast — from the boardroom into the upper reaches of government — and Jeanne discovers that wielding power over the powerful is its own kind of intoxication. François Berléand and Patrick Bruel co-star. Chabrol drew loose inspiration from the Elf Aquitaine scandal, France's biggest corporate-corruption case of the 1990s, which reached all the way to the Élysée Palace.
Released four years before Chabrol's death, the film is a precise, unsentimental character study from a director who spent five decades dissecting French bourgeois morality. Huppert's Jeanne is impossible to read until she's already moved. Stream Comedy of Power online on iFILM.
