Synopsis
Vincent, François, Paul and the Others (1974) is a Claude Sautet drama worth watching online on iFILM. This French classic studies male friendship as it's tested by age and money.
Every Sunday, a group of old friends gathers in the countryside around a full table. Vincent, played by Yves Montand, is broke and sinking in debt as his business collapses and his marriage falls apart. François is a successful doctor who long ago stopped feeling anything. Paul dreamed of becoming a writer and never finished a single book. Beside them stands a young boxer, played by a very early Gérard Depardieu, training for the fight of his life. Sautet films not the events but the gaps between them: kitchen conversations, awkward silences, a glance across the table.
The cast is a rare gathering — Montand, Michel Piccoli, Serge Reggiani, and Depardieu at the start of his career. There's barely a plot in the usual sense; everything rests on tone and on the way people grow old without letting go of each other. Quiet, grown-up cinema for a viewer willing to listen closely.
