Synopsis
Attenberg (2010) is a Greek drama from director Athina Rachel Tsangari, available to watch online on iFILM. It follows Marina, 23, who shares a half-empty seaside factory town with her architect father and treats other people like a species she'd rather observe than join.
Her education is sideways: songs about dying, David Attenborough's nature films about mammals (where the title comes from), and blunt lessons from Bella, her only friend. Then a visitor arrives and challenges her to a game of foosball, while her father quietly prepares to leave a century he calls overrated. Ariane Labed took the Volpi Cup at Venice for the role, and Yorgos Lanthimos — soon to make The Lobster — turns up in a small part.
This is Greek Weird Wave cinema: cool, physical, deadpan, with bursts of choreography standing in for ordinary dialogue. Not a cozy watch, but a precise, awkwardly honest look at how a person learns intimacy. Stream Attenberg online on iFILM.
