Synopsis
In the Fog (2012) — watch online on iFILM. Sergei Loznitsa's wartime drama, based on Vasil Bykov's novella, is set in German-occupied Belarus in 1942. A railway lineman named Sushchenia was let go by the Germans, unharmed. In his village, that single fact becomes an accusation.
Two partisans arrive to carry out an informal verdict. Sushchenia doesn't run. Vladimir Svirsky plays him as a man who has already made his peace with what comes next; Vladislav Abashin and Sergei Kolesov play the partisans — men the war broke long before this particular morning. Loznitsa strips dialogue nearly to nothing and lets the frozen forest carry the weight.
Co-produced across five countries, the film screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2012. Slow and precise, it earns every minute of its 127-minute runtime. Stream In the Fog online on iFILM.
