Synopsis
De Gaulle (2020) is a French historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Gabriel Le Bomin with Lambert Wilson in the lead role. The film is set over a matter of weeks in the early summer of 1940, when German forces entered Paris and the French government moved toward signing an armistice.
Charles de Gaulle is a newly promoted brigadier general who refuses to treat surrender as an option. He reaches London and on 18 June broadcasts his famous appeal to the French people over the BBC — the act that would plant the seed of the Resistance. While he is doing that, his wife Yvonne, played by Isabelle Carré, is on the roads of a country in collapse, trying to keep their three children safe.
The film runs 108 minutes and earns its best moments by keeping the focus tight. It does not try to cover a lifetime; it locks onto the weeks when a man decided who he was going to be. Olivier Gourmet and Laurent Stocker round out a strong cast. If you have any interest in the Second World War or in how political will actually takes shape under pressure, this one delivers.
