Synopsis
Black Venus (Vénus noire, 2010) is Abdellatif Kechiche's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It traces the life of Saartjie Baartman, a South African woman paraded through London and Paris as a fairground curiosity in the early 1800s.
Running nearly three hours, the Belgian-French film refuses to look away. Sara, played by Yahima Torres, came to Europe chasing a stage career; what she found was a cage — paying crowds gathered to gawk at her body, anatomists who measured her like a specimen, a manager who saw only profit. Kechiche shoots it slow and close, with no score to soften the staring.
