Synopsis
The Ideal Palace (L'Incroyable Histoire du facteur Cheval, 2019) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. Jacques Gamblin plays Ferdinand Cheval, a quiet rural postman in the late 1800s who trips over an oddly shaped stone and never quite shakes the image loose.
Cheval walks the same long postal route every day, barely speaking to anyone. The stone sets off a private obsession: to raise a fairy-tale palace for his small daughter out of whatever the road hands him. For more than three decades he hauls rocks in his pockets and a wheelbarrow, mixes mortar after dark, and stacks turrets and grottoes on a patch of land in Hauterives. His wife Philomène, played by Laetitia Casta, learns to read his strange devotion as a kind of love.
Director Nils Tavernier keeps it understated — this is a film about one man's stubbornness against a village of mockers, not a tidy miracle. Best for viewers who like slow stories about craft and solitary making. Cheval's real Palais Idéal still stands in France today. Stream The Ideal Palace (2019) online on iFILM.
