Cargo 200 (2007) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Aleksei Balabanov, this Russian crime drama plants itself in a Soviet provincial town in 1984: a party secretary's daughter vanishes after a disco night, and the case lands on Captain Zhurov, played with chilling blankness by Aleksei Poluyán.

Balabanov wasn't making a thriller. He was making an indictment. The film moves slowly and deliberately, showing how violence survives when the people responsible for stopping it are the same people enabling it. Agnia Kuznetsova, Aleksei Serebryakov and Yuri Stepanov inhabit a world where the victim has no recourse and the uniform functions as a shield. There's no manufactured tension — just a cold, almost clinical record of what coercion looks like when it goes unchecked.

When it came out, Cargo 200 split audiences and critics: some called it an anti-Soviet statement, others dismissed it as calculated provocation.
