Synopsis
The Long Day Closes (1992) is a Terence Davies drama you can watch online on iFILM — mid-1950s Liverpool seen through the eyes of a lonely eleven-year-old boy.
Bud finds his refuge in the dark of the local cinema, where the giant faces on the screen give him the strength to face another grey day of school, church and a loneliness he can't yet name. There's barely a plot here. Davies builds the film out of memory itself — pop songs off the radio, scraps of Hollywood dialogue, the camera drifting slowly along walls and staircases.
This is Davies' own childhood put on screen, a love letter to the movies and music that raised him, and one of the tenderest British films ever made about being young. It's quiet and nearly storyless, but settle into its rhythm and it lingers for years. Stream The Long Day Closes (1992) online on iFILM.
