Synopsis
The Photographer of Mauthausen (El fotógrafo de Mauthausen, 2018) is a Spanish-Hungarian historical thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mar Targarona and starring Mario Casas. It tells the documented story of Francesc Boix, a Catalan photographer who ended up imprisoned at the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp and was put to work in the SS photographic unit.
Boix and a small group of fellow prisoners began secretly holding back negatives — thousands of them, shot between 1943 and 1945, showing what the camp administration intended to keep invisible. Getting caught meant death. The film builds its tension not through action but through the grinding fear of concealment: every inspection, every roll of film, every shifted glance.
What makes the story land beyond the war genre is where it ends up. Boix later testified at the Nuremberg Trials, and the photographs he helped preserve became prosecution evidence. Director Targarona keeps the focus tight and restrained, letting the weight of the facts do the work. Stream The Photographer of Mauthausen (2018) online on iFILM.
