The Endless Trench

The Endless Trench (La trinchera infinita, 2019) is a Spanish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Jon Garaño, Aitor Arregi and Jose Mari Goenaga. In Andalusia in 1936, newlyweds Higinio and Rosa see their marriage swallowed whole by the Spanish Civil War — and by Higinio's decision to hide from Franco's firing squads in a pit dug beneath their own home.

What starts as days stretches into months, then years, then decades. Antonio de la Torre plays Higinio — a man for whom the boundary between hiding and disappearing gradually dissolves. Belén Cuesta plays Rosa, who maintains a normal surface life outside while protecting the secret underneath. Their bond, tested across thirty years in a few square metres, is the entire substance of the film.
