Synopsis
The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena, 1973) is Víctor Erice's hushed, dreamlike drama, available to watch online on iFILM. On the bleak Castilian plain, not long after the guns of the civil war fall quiet, seven-year-old Ana sees a film for the first time — a traveling cinema rolls into the village with James Whale's Frankenstein.
The monster lodges in her mind and won't leave. Her older sister Isabel whispers that the creature never really died — it lives on as a spirit in an abandoned barn down the road. So Ana keeps going back, certain that one day it will reveal itself to her. The grown-ups are lost in their own worlds: her father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) writes about bees and hives, her mother (Teresa Gimpera) mails letters to someone far away. The child and her secret go all but unnoticed.
Erice slipped one of Spanish cinema's defining films past Franco's censors through a child's eyes and what's left unspoken — the beehive a quiet stand-in for a numbed, shuttered country. Ana Torrent's debut, those enormous dark eyes, became a legend of European film. Slow, near-silent cinema for viewers who like meaning tucked between the frames.
