Synopsis
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) is a Technicolor comedy starring Danny Kaye that you can watch online on iFILM. A meek magazine proofreader, smothered by his mother, keeps slipping out of dull reality into vivid daydreams where he's an ace pilot, a surgeon, a sea captain.
Then the fantasies start bleeding into his actual life. Walter bumps into a mysterious woman (Virginia Mayo) who presses a little black book into his hands — supposedly a map to Dutch crown jewels missing since the war. A real conspiracy closes in, and Mitty can no longer tell which danger is invented and which is chasing him for real. Boris Karloff turns up as a sinister doctor.
Director Norman Z. McLeod adapts James Thurber's celebrated short story, the one that dropped the phrase "a Walter Mitty" into the dictionary as shorthand for a daydreamer. The whole picture is a showcase for Kaye's rapid-fire patter songs and double-talk. Stream The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) online on iFILM.
