Synopsis
Drift Away (Albatros, 2021) is a French drama from Xavier Beauvois you can watch online on iFILM. Laurent runs a small gendarmerie post in coastal Normandy, loves his job and is about to marry Marie, the mother of his little girl.
Then a routine call goes wrong. A desperate farmer threatens to shoot himself, and in the chaos Laurent's own weapon goes off. One mistake erases the quiet life he built. Guilt swallows him whole, and the only place he can breathe is out on the water, alone with an old sailboat.
Beauvois — whose Of Gods and Men took the Cannes Grand Prix — shoots this slow and plain, letting Jérémie Renier carry whole scenes with his face. Victor Belmondo, grandson of Jean-Paul, turns up in support. There are no twists here, just a man trying to live with something he can't undo. One for viewers who like restrained European cinema.
