Synopsis
The Country Doctor (Médecin de campagne, 2016) is a French drama by Thomas Lilti that you can watch online on iFILM. Jean-Pierre has been the only doctor for miles of rural countryside — seven days a week, night calls included, every patient known by name. François Cluzet plays him; Marianne Denicourt plays Nathalie, the young hospital doctor sent to cover for him when Jean-Pierre himself falls ill.
Nathalie arrives from the city expecting a temporary posting and finds a practice built entirely on trust that took decades to earn. Lilti, who trained as a doctor before turning to filmmaking, keeps the camera at ground level: no sentimentality, no condescension, just the texture of a job that asks everything of one person. The film is at its best in the small exchanges — a farmer who won't discuss his diagnosis, an elderly woman who needs company more than a prescription.
