Three Komsomol friends — Kaitanov, Ufimtsev and Akishin — volunteer for Moscow's first metro construction in the 1930s, and that shared beginning pulls them through Spain, the Second World War and into postwar rebuilding. The film is based on Yevgeni Dolmatovsky's verse novel, with Mikhail Ulyanov, Elina Bystritskaya, Leonid Bykov and Nonna Mordyukova heading the cast — a lineup that amounts to its own portrait of a generation of Soviet cinema.
