Southwest France, the 1920s, the pine forests of the Landes. Thérèse marries Bernard in a match that ties together two wealthy landowning families. The orderly comfort of the estate soon closes around her like a cell — a dull husband, talk of money and hunting, nowhere to put her own restless mind. Almost without deciding to, she begins slipping extra drops into his medicine. Audrey Tautou plays her cold, shut-in, impossible to read.
