Synopsis
Naked Childhood (L'Enfance nue, 1969) is a French drama by Maurice Pialat that you can watch online on iFILM. It follows François, a boy of about ten whose mother has handed him to foster care without ever quite letting go. He moves through the world certain that he belongs nowhere and to no one.
One household passes him to the next. The grown-ups mean well — the elderly Thierry couple genuinely try to draw the difficult child out — yet François answers their patience with small acts of harm: cruelty to a cat, a bit of theft, a reckless prank on the road. Pialat neither explains nor scolds. He simply watches an unloved kid test the limits of everyone who dares come close.
This was Pialat's first feature, produced by François Truffaut, shot with non-professional actors and an almost documentary plainness. No swelling score, no easy sentiment — just observation that aches more than any melodrama could. A quiet, uncomfortable film for anyone drawn to French auteur cinema and an honest look at abandoned children. Stream Naked Childhood online on iFILM.
