Synopsis
Mickey: The Story of a Mouse (2022) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Director Jeff Malmberg takes those three famous circles — recognizable to nearly everyone alive — and asks what almost a century of Mickey says about us rather than about Disney.
The film traces the character from Steamboat Willie's first whistle in 1928 to the present, treating the mouse as a mirror that reflects each era's values back at it. Studio animators including Floyd Norman, Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn talk through how Mickey's personality kept shifting with the times. Running alongside is a second thread: a team hand-drawing a brand-new Mickey short on paper, which lets you watch classic animation actually being made, frame by frame.
Malmberg doesn't dodge the awkward parts — the merchandising, the copyright fights, the way a symbol of innocence became a symbol of a corporation. Talking heads range from Bob Iger to archival Walt Disney, while the edit stitches Warhol, Bowie and Lennon into one cultural collage. It's aimed less at nostalgia and more at anyone curious how a mass-produced image takes on meaning. Stream Mickey: The Story of a Mouse (2022) online on iFILM.
