Synopsis
Watch Madame Bovary (2015) online — a Belgian-German-American drama directed by Sophie Barthes, with Mia Wasikowska as the restless country doctor's wife who tears her own life apart chasing something she can't name. The film runs 118 minutes.
Emma Bovary has read too many novels about grand passion and comes away from each one more dissatisfied with her quiet provincial marriage. She takes lovers — a young aristocrat, a local lawyer — and runs up debts on dresses and baubles she can't afford. Rhys Ifans plays her well-meaning, oblivious husband; Ezra Miller and Logan Marshall-Green are her two entanglements; Paul Giamatti turns up as the moneylender who will outlast them all.
Flaubert's 1857 novel put its author on trial for offending public morality, yet the book never went out of print — which tells you something about how accurately it described a certain kind of hunger. Barthes and cinematographer Yorick Le Saux lean into the visual trap: the world looks gorgeous and suffocating in equal measure, which is exactly the point.
