Synopsis
World of Glory (Härlig är jorden, 1991) is a 17-minute short by Roy Andersson you can watch online on iFILM. Seventeen minutes that put the Swedish director on the art-house map for good.
A nameless ordinary man walks the viewer through his life — his job, his flat, his relatives, a funeral — narrating it flatly, straight to camera. The world around him is drained of color, grey-green and frozen in place. The opening scene lands like a blow and sets the whole tone: behind all the polite normality sits a quiet complicity in evil that no one wants to name out loud.
You can already see the Andersson style that would later make Songs from the Second Floor famous — static painterly frames, long unbroken takes, deathly pale makeup and pitch-black humor. This isn't easy viewing; it's cold, airless and deliberately uncomfortable. But for anyone who loves a big authorial statement compressed into a small form, it's close to required watching.
