The young organisers, led by Lena Krylova, run a quiet counter-operation — pin Ogurtsov down in endless conversations while the actual show goes on without him. Ilyinsky plays the director with such sincere bureaucratic conviction that the character is funny without tipping into caricature. Sergei Filippov's turn as a lecturer on the dangers of alcohol runs three minutes and lands every second of them.

Ryazanov's debut feature and Gurchenko's breakthrough in the same film. It topped the Soviet box office in 1956, and the song "Five Minutes," sung by Gurchenko, became so woven into New Year's Eve in the Soviet Union that Russian audiences still associate the holiday with it.
