Synopsis
Walking the Streets of Moscow (Ya shagayu po Moskve, 1964) is Georgiy Daneliya's lyrical comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. One summer day in the capital. Volodya, a fitter from Siberia, is in Moscow between trains: a short story of his ran in the magazine Yunost, and a writer named Voronin has invited him over to talk. In the metro he meets Kolya, a cheerful subway worker — and the day takes off on its own.
Almost nothing "happens," and that is the whole point. Chance encounters, a quarrel that mends itself, a shopgirl named Alyona falling in love, a daft chase across town, and a sudden summer downpour with a barefoot girl walking the wet pavement. A teenage Nikita Mikhalkov, as Kolya, hums Andrei Petrov's famous tune, and sixties Moscow becomes pure feeling — youth, lightness, an afternoon you don't want to end.
The screenplay came from twenty-six-year-old Gennady Shpalikov, and his tone — no moral, no plot machinery — turned the film into an emblem of the Thaw era. It runs barely seventy-eight minutes, yet people have carried it for decades. One for viewers who love warm, quiet cinema where mood matters more than events.
