Synopsis
The End (2024) is Joshua Oppenheimer's post-apocalyptic musical drama, now available to watch online on iFILM. The surface of the Earth has been dead for twenty-five years. A former oil baron's family rides out the ruin inside a vast salt-mine bunker, hung with old master paintings and held together by the daily rituals of a life that ended long ago.
The Son (George MacKay) was born underground and has never seen the sky. Father (Michael Shannon), Mother (Tilda Swinton), the family doctor and the butler keep the careful peace until a stranger gets in — a young survivor, Girl (Moses Ingram). Her questions crack the comforting story the family tells about who they once saved and who they left at the locked doors. Then they break into song, lush Golden-Age numbers that float through the recycled air.
This is the first scripted feature from Oppenheimer, who made the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. Score by Joshua Schmidt and Marius de Vries, shot deep in a real salt mine. Slow, strange and deliberately uneasy, it rewards viewers who like a genre turned inside out rather than served straight. Stream The End (2024) online on iFILM.
