Synopsis
The Act of Killing (2012) is Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary you can watch online on iFILM. In Indonesia after the 1965–66 military takeover, death squads killed over a million people branded as communists. The men who ran the killings faced no trial. Decades later, they're community leaders.
Oppenheimer invited several of them to recreate their massacres on film — in whatever genre they liked: gangster cinema, musical, western. Anwar Congo and his crew said yes without hesitation, and brought their own costumes. The camera just kept rolling. What happens next, as performance and memory start to bleed into each other, is unlike anything in documentary film.
The film was up for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and picked up awards at major festivals across Europe and North America. Co-produced by Errol Morris and Werner Herzog, it works as a political document, a study of impunity, and something genuinely hard to shake. Stream The Act of Killing online on iFILM.
