Synopsis
Judy & Punch (2019) is an Australian dark comedy you can watch online on iFILM. In her debut feature, writer-director Mirrah Foulkes flips the traditional puppet show: Judy is the skilled one, Punch is the loud drunk who takes the credit. Mia Wasikowska and Damon Herriman play the pair performing in the fictional town of Seaside — nowhere near the sea, as the film's opening title card notes.
Punch drinks. Loses control. Assumes nothing will follow. Judy survives — and in the forest, among the town's outcasts, starts building an answer. The film is a revenge story told as a darkly comic folktale, with wigs, corrupt officials, and a tone that knows exactly how funny the horror is.
Foulkes premiered the film at Sundance. What she's actually made is a period piece about complicity — a puppet-show village where everyone sees what happens and nobody says anything. Watch Judy & Punch (2019) on iFILM.
