Synopsis
Fanfan the Tulip (Fanfan la Tulipe, 1952) is a French swashbuckling comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Christian-Jaque directs, and Gérard Philipe plays the title rogue — a peasant who would rather chase glory than settle into a forced marriage.
So Fanfan signs up with the army of Louis XV. A roadside fortune-teller has promised him battlefield honors and a bride of royal blood, and that is reason enough. The teller turns out to be Adeline, the recruiting sergeant's daughter, played by Gina Lollobrigida. Once the trick comes out, Fanfan still refuses to let the prophecy go. He charges after it sword-first, grinning his way through duels, rooftop chases and palace intrigue while the film quietly winks at every cape-and-sword cliché it borrows.
The picture took the directing prize at Cannes and an award at Berlin, and it turned Philipe into a star adored across the continent. What sets it apart is the tone: it treats heroic adventure as a joke worth telling well, light on its feet and never self-serious. If costume epics usually feel like homework, this one feels like play. Stream Fanfan the Tulip (1952) online on iFILM.
