Synopsis
Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille, 1996) — Caroline Link's German drama, nominated for a foreign-film Oscar — is available to watch online on iFILM. Lara grew up as the bridge between her deaf parents and a world of sound they could never enter. She learned to translate everything: conversations, phone calls, arguments, the evening news.
Then her aunt gives her a clarinet. It takes hold fast and completely, and for the first time Lara has something she cannot pass back to her parents in sign language. Sylvie Testud plays the adult Lara with a restrained kind of ache; Tatjana Trieb carries the childhood half of the film with almost no support. Howie Seago and Emmanuelle Laborit — both deaf actors — play the parents without a trace of sentimentality.
Link keeps the film honest by treating the parents as full characters rather than obstacles. The question it quietly asks — how long can one person translate for others before needing a voice of their own — stays with you. Stream Beyond Silence (1996) online on iFILM.
