Synopsis
The African Doctor (Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont, 2016) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM. The year is 1975, and Seyolo Zantoko, a doctor from Congo, accepts the only job offered to him: the single open practice in a tiny village in northern France.
He trained for Paris and landed somewhere that had never seen a Black physician — and wanted nothing to do with one. Patients walk past his door. His wife Anne aches for Kinshasa. Their kids trade punches in the schoolyard. Marc Zinga plays a man who keeps treating people who refuse to trust him, slowly earning a whole town one patient at a time. Aïssa Maïga is the wife already packing her bags.
It really happened: Seyolo was the father of French rapper Kamini, who grew up in Marly-Gomont itself. Warm without turning sappy, directed by Julien Rambaldi, it's the rare fish-out-of-water story that lets the prejudice sting before it softens. Stream The African Doctor (2016) online on iFILM.
