Synopsis
Very Happy Alexander (Alexandre le bienheureux, 1968) is a French comedy by Yves Robert that you can watch online on iFILM. Alexandre works his farm from dawn to dusk under the thumb of a domineering wife — until one accident hands him his freedom.
When his wife dies in a car crash, Alexandre (Philippe Noiret) does what half the village secretly dreams of: he climbs into bed and simply stops getting up. For months. A loyal dog fetches his meals and the morning paper, while the local men watch this blissful idleness with a mix of horror and envy. The calm breaks when Agathe (Marlène Jobert) arrives in town — a pretty young orphan who quickly sizes up the wealthy layabout as a fine catch.
Noiret plays laziness as a quiet act of rebellion against everyone else's expectations, and that's where the film finds its charm. Gentle, sunlit and a little absurd, it's a story about a man's right to do absolutely nothing. One for lovers of vintage French cinema and anyone worn out by the daily grind.
