River's Edge

River's Edge (リバーズ・エッジ, 2018) is a Japanese high-school drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Isao Yukisada, it starts with a dead body on the riverbank — unidentified, unexplained — and the question of who left it there quickly becomes less important than what happens to the teenagers who discover it.

Haruna is drawn in through Yamada, the class outcast who already knows about the body and quietly knows about everything else: the model with her own solitary orbit, the girl who loves him in a way he can't return, the violence running just below the surface of ordinary school days. What forms between this small group isn't friendship — it's the particular closeness that comes from sharing something nobody can talk about. Fumi Nikaido holds the film's center with the kind of stillness that could be calm or could be damage, and the movie never quite decides which.
