Synopsis

Big John McMasters (Gable) and Sand (Tracy) are wildcatter partners who drill together, go broke together, and climb back up. Their long friendship survives droughts and dry wells — until Betsy (Colbert) arrives from out of state, intending to marry Sand and ending up wed to McMasters instead. Karen (Lamarr) enters the picture later and sharpens the tension further. The story moves through booms, busts, courtrooms, and competing loyalties over two decades.
