Synopsis
The Maid (La nana, 2009) is a Chilean tragicomedy by Sebastián Silva, available to watch online on iFILM. Raquel has spent twenty-three years — half her life — as the live-in housekeeper for the well-off Valdés family. Their house is the only world she has, and she will guard it by any means.
When her employer hires a second maid to ease the workload, Raquel reads it as a threat. She declares a silent war on each newcomer: petty sabotage, locked doors, childish cruelty, anything to drive the rival out. One after another, the new servants flee, while Raquel sinks deeper into exhaustion and painkillers. Then comes Lucy — open, cheerful, from the provinces, and completely immune to the games.
Catalina Saavedra is in almost every frame and carries the whole thing; her Raquel is repellent and quietly heartbreaking at the same time. The film took the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was Chile's submission to the Oscars. A patient, watchful portrait of the invisible people who live inside other families' homes.
