Synopsis

Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus (2013) is a Chilean tragicomedy from Sebastián Silva, ready to watch online on iFILM. Jamie, a self-absorbed young American, is chasing a hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus somewhere up the coast of Chile.

Drunk at a party, he blurts out an invitation to a wild stranger — Crystal Fairy, a free-spirited hippie with no filter and no shame. What follows is a road trip north with his buddies: a beach, a bonfire, a shamanic ritual, and a cactus nobody quite knows how to brew. Jamie grates on everyone around him; Crystal grates right back on Jamie. Michael Cera and Gaby Hoffmann play two people forced to put up with each other.

Silva shot the whole thing fast and largely improvised, and that looseness gives it a raw, almost documentary awkwardness. By the end, the drug-trip comedy quietly turns into something tender.
