The Penal Battalion (2004) is a Russian drama series you can watch online on iFILM — director Nikolai Dostal's blunt look at the shtrafbaty, the punishment battalions where the Soviet military sent criminals and political prisoners to fight for their lives on the deadliest frontlines of 1942–44.

Alexei Serebryakov plays a battalion commander squeezed between orders from above and men below who have no legal standing whatsoever. The logic of the system was straightforward: penal soldiers needed no regular supplies, no protection, and no particular reason to survive. German machine guns from the front, NKVD blocking detachments from behind. Yuri Stepanov, Andrei Merzlikin and Pavel Derevyanko fill out a cast that avoids both heroics and cheap victimhood.
