The Liberator (Season 1)
No soldier survives alone.
Synopsis
The Liberator (2020) is a Netflix animated miniseries you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Grzegorz Jonkajtys. The four-episode show follows Felix Sparks, an American officer who led a racially integrated combat unit through more than five hundred days of fighting — from the Allied landings in Sicily all the way to the gates of Dachau. Bradley James provides the voice performance.
Sparks commands a patchwork company: Texans, Mexican-Americans, and Native American soldiers from the Thunderbird Division — men the U.S. Army officially kept segregated but threw together out of necessity. Martin Sensmeier plays Taoka Whitetree, a fictional character standing in for the real Native veterans of that unit. The battles across Italy and southern Germany are rendered in TriScope, a production technique that blends live action with animation to produce something that looks like a moving vintage war poster.
For a four-episode run, it covers serious ground without turning itself into a textbook. The visual format is genuinely unusual, and the unit's story — long overshadowed by better-documented campaigns — deserves more attention than it gets.
