Synopsis
Byelorussian Station (1971) is a Soviet drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Andrei Smirnov. The cast — Yevgeny Leonov, Anatoly Papanov, Vsevolod Safonov, and Nina Urgant — makes it one of the finest ensemble pictures Soviet cinema put together.
Summer, 1945. Four soldiers said goodbye on the platform of Moscow's Byelorussian Station and went their separate ways. Twenty-five years later, a comrade's death brings them back. They are all older, quieter, anchored in civilian routines — a factory worker, a bureaucrat, a man who simply drifted. The reunion does not restore what the war built between them. It just reveals how much of it is still there.
Smirnov wrote the script without sentiment: these are not men on pedestals but people who are tired and cannot let go. The closing scene, where Nina Urgant sings Bulat Okudzhava's wartime song, is one of the most moving moments in Soviet film. Stream Byelorussian Station (1971) online on iFILM.
