Synopsis
Chekist (1992) is Aleksandr Rogozhkin's unflinching historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM (18+). It drops you into the first years after the 1917 takeover, when a provincial branch of the Cheka — Lenin's newly built secret police — runs like a factory. Arrest. A one-minute interrogation. A verdict in ten seconds. A bullet in the basement. Then it starts over.
At the center stands Srubov, a cold, well-read interrogator who keeps trying to reason his way into justifying the slaughter. Five naked prisoners at a time, lined up facing the wooden doors; the bodies loaded onto a cart; the same routine before dawn the next day. The longer Srubov philosophizes about the meaning of revolution, the more visibly his own mind comes apart. The film adapts Vladimir Zazubrin's novella "The Sliver," written back in 1923 and banned for decades. Igor Sergeev, Aleksei Poluyan and Mikhail Wasserbaum head the cast.
This French-Russian co-production is impossible to watch with any distance. Rogozhkin films the violence dry and almost clerical, which lands harder than any stylized horror could. It is not a film for everyone — but if you can sit with a story about an idea devouring a man, few Russian films cut this deep. Stream Chekist (1992) online on iFILM.
