PG-13Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld
Synopsis
Cyberbunker: The Criminal Underworld (2023) is a German documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Kilian Lieb and Max Rainer trace how a group of hackers converted a decommissioned Cold War NATO bunker in the wine-country town of Traben-Trarbach into a bulletproof hosting platform for some of the internet's darkest corners.
From outside, the site looked like a guarded data centre in a sleepy riverside town. Inside, servers ran darknet marketplaces, ransomware operations, and drug sales serving clients across Europe and beyond. German police raided it in 2019. Up to that point, locals had no idea what was happening under the hill.
The film is built on interviews with investigators, prosecutors, and people close to those charged. What sticks is how mundane the setup was — organised cybercrime at scale, housed in a building anyone could have driven past.
