Synopsis
I Believe! (Veruyu!, 2009) is a drama by Lidiya Bobrova that you can watch online on iFILM. A quiet film about the Russian countryside and the people in it, wrestling with what to believe and what keeps them going at all.
Bobrova built the picture from the short stories of Vasily Shukshin, and his voice runs all the way through it: the characters are ordinary village men and women, carrying their own ache, their drinking, their longing and the odd flash of clarity. One of them goes to a priest with a blunt question about meaning; another drowns the emptiness in work and vodka. Plain conversations keep colliding with the biggest things there are — death, conscience, faith. The cast includes Aleksandr Aravushkin, Irina Osnovina and Olga Shukshina.
There is no moral spelled out for you and no staged piety — just real faces and the silences between lines, which is where the answer hides. If you love Shukshin and slow auteur cinema, this lands. Stream I Believe! (2009) online on iFILM.
